All-male dance company LIFTDance was formed in Atlanta in 2010 by Daryl L. Foster and Terry Slade. LIFT was an intervention and an opportunity to give (primarily Black) male dancers a platform to explore masculinity beyond the bounds and stereotypes of the White, Westernized, and heteronormative ideals of ballet and contemporary dance. I photographed the company from 2010-2012, documenting auditions, rehearsals, and performances to capture moments of connection, community, and a passion for performance shared by everyone in the LIFT family.
